About the Editor

Hi everyone!

I'm Vanessa, and I'm the editor of this project.

For a long time, I wasn't sure of what I was interested in. I knew I was more of a humanities person, I was decent at Chinese and Spanish, interested in learning Japanese, involved in linguistics competitions, and dabbling in writing competitions and the school literary magazine.

With some encouragement from my sister and a few teachers, I decided to start this online and print magazine blog project based on creativity, language, and writing, the few things I knew I enjoyed.  It was a slow process at first to reach out to fellow peers and ask if they'd be interested in this unique endeavor. Being the more reserved person I am, it was crazy for me to think how I would have the nerve to follow through with my plans. Coming out of my shell and sharing my ideas and work with everyone out there (even though it's through the Internet) has been a challenge. But because of this, I'm improving myself, reaching out to the world, and making my interests and values heard.

Though I was worried at first, a good number of people were excited to participate in this, to show their views and opinions on language and anything about it. The people who have talked to me about it have a wide variety of interests, come from many different backgrounds, and even live scattered across the country, some even outside the US. At this point, I realized: Language is universal. No matter what you are interested in, or what you want to be in the future, you will always use language to communicate and express thoughts. Language is a sign of human curiosity and creativity, and because there are so many languages that people speak, it becomes a source of pride and identity for every single person.

I hope that through this magazine project, more people will discover more about how humans communicate, and I hope they will learn about the inspiring, empowering, and profound intricacies and impacts of language. In essence, I hope people find "New Semantics" behind language itself.
